Finding your way

One of the problems with starting out in an area you know nothing about is knowing where to start.  About a month ago, I was inspired by some of the neuroscience articles to build a platform upon which I can play with a variety of learning algorithms.

There are a number of possibilities.  Given my affinity to Microsoft, it seemed only natural to look at either hardware platforms built on .NET (e.g. Arduino or other TinyCLR devices) or something compatible with the Microsoft Robotics Development System (e.g. Lego Mindstorm).  Given that my friend Pete Brown (along with other friends) are familiar with the Arduino boards, the ecosystem of Arduino hardware extensions and the amount of source code – the Arduino boards seem the natural choice.  Although I have to learn more about Microsoft Robotics Development System…
